Tea Lover’s Guide to San Francisco’s Top 3 Spots (by a Former Local)
San Francisco isn’t just a city of picturesque views, historic landmarks, and fog-kissed skies. For tea lovers, it’s steeped in unique, cozy spots that make every sip an adventure.
After calling this vibrant city home for five years, living in the Dogpatch and Potrero Hill neighborhoods, I’ve curated some favorite tea havens that capture the spirit of San Francisco. Bonus: these spots are nestled near iconic landmarks, so you can enjoy them while exploring the city.
Here’s my guide to the top three tea stops you don’t want to miss.
Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park

Steeped in Tradition and Flavor
Sip the Matcha. Treat Yourself with Tea Delights.
The Japanese Tea Garden, tucked within Golden Gate Park, is a dreamy escape that blends history, serenity, and the bold flavors of tea. Visiting here is a sensory treat, but there’s an extra perk for the early birds—admission is free on weekday mornings before 10 AM!

Why the Japanese Tea Garden is a Must-Visit Tea Spot
This spot holds a special place in my heart. My love affair with the Japanese Tea Garden began in 2015 when my mom gifted me a trip to San Francisco. We visited the garden during our stay, and it was one of the rare moments in my life where I felt utterly at peace. Fast forward a year—I moved to the Bay Area, and for the next eight years, this garden became an annual pilgrimage for me.
Beyond its lush flora, koi ponds, and red pagodas, it’s their matcha that won me over. Initially, I was hesitant to try it (I’m quite picky with my matcha), so I stuck with the hojicha tea. Eventually, I gave in and ordered the matcha, and now it’s my absolute favorite. Their matcha is always paired with a mochi stuffed with red bean paste to balance the tea’s mild bitterness, aligning beautifully with Japanese tea traditions.

But there’s so much more than just tea here. Their menu boasts delightful offerings, and I’ve personally become obsessed with their green tea cheesecake. It’s a creamy, subtly sweet treat that pairs perfectly with their tea selection. For something heartier, I’ve enjoyed both their vegetarian chili and their chicken karmage; everything I’ve tried here has been consistently delicious.
If you’re staying for a meal, aim for one of the seats overlooking the garden’s waterfall. There’s something incredibly peaceful about dining to the sound of cascading water, surrounded by serene nature. It’s a perfect spot for a moment of calm in the middle of a bustling city.
What makes it even more magical is its location. Smack-dab in Golden Gate Park, it’s surrounded by fascinating landmarks like the de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences. While it takes a bit more effort to reach via public transportation (especially compared to other attractions), the nearby botanical gardens and the park’s beauty make it worth the trek.
Equator Coffees by the Golden Gate Bridge

Cozy Café with Iconic Golden Gate Views
Warmth in a Cup. A Relaxing Bay Area Retreat.
Right by the Golden Gate Bridge, this Equator Coffees spot is perfectly positioned to offer stunning views and amazing tea (or coffee, if that’s more your thing). Walking into the round, glass-walled café feels like stepping into an intimate retreat, with every seat offering breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Why Equator Coffees is one of San Francisco’s Best Tea Spots
I first discovered Equator Coffees while working downtown, where their pop-up in the Financial District kept me fueled with matcha on busy days. But this location is far superior. For me, nothing beats sitting outdoors with fog rolling across the Bridge while sipping a hot matcha latte or an iced tea on sunnier afternoons. The patio spaces are just as lovely as the inside, so whatever the weather, it’s the perfect spot to recharge.

Oh, and their pastries? Divine. Their croissants, muffins, and donuts stand up to the views, making it a full-on sensory experience. Pro tip: venture inside the Bridge’s welcome center for souvenirs like a real rivet from the Golden Gate Bridge. How cool is that?
Boba Guys at Potrero Hill

Best Boba Spot Near the Chase Center
Seasonal Favorites and Fresh Boba Options.
No trip to San Francisco is complete without indulging in some boba, and it doesn’t get better than Boba Guys. With locations all over the city, their Potrero Hill spot stands out—not just because it was in my old neighborhood, but because of its proximity to the Chase Center, home of my beloved Golden State Warriors!

Why Boba Guys is a Favorite Tea Spot in San Francisco
Boba Guys has always nailed quality, creativity, and a commitment to the community. While their menu staples like the Strawberry Jasmine Fresca are delightful and refreshing, it’s their seasonal specials like the Matchapeachu that really elevate the experience. It perfectly blends fruity and floral notes, making it my go-to treat whenever it’s on the menu. Pairing it with one of their pastries or snacks is always a good idea.

What makes this location even more special is its convenience for Warriors fans. Many game-goers park nearby, grab a quick boba, and stroll over to the Chase Center. If you’re navigating via public transit, you’re in luck too, since there’s a prominent bus stop nearby. While you can’t go wrong visiting any of their locations, this one is perfect for a pre-game (or post-game) treat.
